Is Procrastination-Syndrome Getting in your Way?

As the holidays fly by, I realize that I procrastinate in some areas. Do you find that to be true for you? With so much technology available to us, you would think we wouldn’t have a problem with procrastination. The ability to overcome procrastination and tackle the important items on your list can have the biggest positive impact in your life.

Why do we procrastinate? For me, these are the main reasons I push tasks aside:

  1. Inadequate resources such as money, time, information, etc.
  2. The task feels overwhelming.
  3. I just don’t have the passion to do it.
  4. I need a deadline. If I don’t have a clear deadline, I keep pushing it aside.
  5. I just don’t know where to begin.
  6. I don’t have the skill to complete the task.
  7. I confess, sometimes it’s even because I have a fear of failure or success.

I have found that there are some techniques that work well for me. If you struggle with the procrastination syndrome, try a few of these ideas:

  1. The 15-Minute Rule. I’ve learned that if I give the project 15 minutes of my time, I get past the feeling of being overwhelmed and usually end up working on the project longer. Often, I’ve completed the project and thought, “Why did I wait so long to do this?”
  2. Deadlines. If I don’t have one, I create one. That motivates me.
  3. Chunk | Block | Tackle Method. When I break large projects into smaller specific tasks, it’s easier to keep focused. Block out set times to complete the specific chunks and tackle the specific tasks. If you focus only on the task rather than the project, it feels and is more manageable.
  4. S.T.I.N.G. Method. If you still can’t seem to focus, try the S.T.I.N.G. method. Select one task to do at a time, time yourself (no more than one hour), ignore everything else during that time, no breaks or interruptions permitted, and give yourself a reward when the time is up.

  6. Eat That Frog! Have you ever heard this quote? “If the first thing you do each morning is to eat a live frog, you can go through the day with the satisfaction of knowing that that is probably the worst thing that is going to happen to you all day long!” Your frog is the task that will have the greatest impact on achieving your goals or priorities, or the task that you are most likely to procrastinate doing. Make eating your frog your biggest priority each day.
